Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 25, 2017) – Johnny Herrera overcame a DNF on the opening night of the 44th annual Winter Nationals last weekend at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, where he captured his 30th top-10 finish of the season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour during the finale.

The weekend began on a strong note for Herrera, who maneuvered from seventh to fourth place during a heat race on Friday. That earned a spot in the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 3 to start the A Main on the inside of the second row.

“The first couple of laps we ran inside the top five,” he said. “Then it started hanging the throttle. In turns three and four you could be wide open, but in turns one and two you had to be off the throttle a bit. I had to pull it up with my foot. Then it’d load the car and go across the track. I tried to do that for six or seven laps and I lost a few positions. I thought I’d end up wrecking myself or somebody else so I stopped.”

Herrera was in contention for at least a top 10 when he exited the track just after the midpoint of the race. He was credited with a 20th-place result.

The team swapped engines for Saturday’s finale, which Herrera kicked off by winning a heat race from the pole position. That lined him up on the inside of the fifth row for the main event.

“We passed a couple of cars and got to sixth within a lap or two,” he said. “We rode around there. We were racing back and forth with Matt Covington and John Carney II. Toward the end Wayne Johnson got by me. It was one of those things where you go for a slide job, don’t clear it and lose momentum so it allows someone by.”

Herrera capped the event with a seventh-place result. His 30 top 10s with the series is tied for second most.

Herrera ranks fifth in the championship standings with only one weekend of racing remaining this season. He will be off the next couple of weeks prior to the finale Nov. 9-11 at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz.
