Inside Line Promotions – CALHAN, Colo. (Oct. 10, 2017) – Johnny Herrera produced his series-leading 29th top-10 finish of the season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last Saturday at El Paso County Raceway during the Colorado ASCS Fall Nationals.

However, the result wasn’t what Herrera expected during his debut at the unique oval, which was delayed one day after Friday’s opening round of the doubleheader rained out.

“I’d never been to that track and it was a unique shape,” he said. “It didn’t turn out as good as we wanted. We started out ok and we made the redraw, but I didn’t keep up with the car very good.”

Herrera placed second in a heat race to earn enough points to advance into the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 3 during the random redraw to start the A Main on the inside of the second row.

“In turns one and two I was fine, but I lost so much in turns three and four,” he said. “I was terrible off turn four. They’d get me there or have a better entry into turn one because of the run they’d get. I was way loose and couldn’t get off the corner. Once I started getting passed I overdrove it. The longer we ran the worst we got.”

Herrera slowly faded to a seventh-place finish. He is tied for the most top 10s in ASCS National Tour competition this season.

“I’m missing something and I haven’t pinpointed what it is,” he said. “I just haven’t been as good this year. I think there’s a couple of things I’ve done wrong. You keep looking at notes and you realize a pattern. Hopefully when we get to Devil’s Bowl we’ll see if we can get back to something better than we’ve been.”

Herrera will take this weekend off before returning to action Oct. 20-21 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the 44th annual Winter Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

He ranks fifth in the championship standings – only 30 points out of fourth place – with seven races remaining.
