Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (Oct. 3, 2017) – Johnny Herrera is heading to a homecoming of sorts this weekend.

Herrera will compete in the state he was born – Colorado – on Friday and Saturday at El Paso County Raceway in Calhan for the Colorado ASCS Fall Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

“It’s kinda cool because that’s where I was born, in Denver,” he said. “I remember some things about Denver. I remember all the snow. I remember one time I got in trouble because I had a Doberman who would follow me wherever I would go. I had some money and went to buy candy at a store. My dog followed me in and when I left he walked through the glass door. It cut his eye up and everything. I got in trouble for that. It’s cool to go back to where I was born. I was 5 or 6-years-old when we moved to Albuquerque.”

Herrera said it has been nearly two decades since he’s raced in Colorado.

“The last time I was there would have been a World of Outlaws race,” he said. “That was probably the mid-to-late 1990s.”

Herrera is coming off a solid performance last Saturday at I-80 Speedway, where he maneuvered from fifth to second place in the first heat race before ending sixth in the second heat.

“We were good in the first heat race, which put us pretty good in points going into the second heat,” he said. “We ended up breaking a left front torsion stop the second lap in. That put us behind. Instead of going forward we lost spots and instead of starting toward the front of the feature we started midpack.”

Herrera lined up 12th for the A Main and the track took rubber early, which made it difficult to pass.

“We had good speed and we passed a few cars,” he said. “We got by (Matt) Covington once in the race, but I got too tight and missed the rubber so he got back by. Overall, it was a good race. We did what we could.”

Herrera placed eighth to garner his 37th top 10 of the season.
