Inside Line Promotions – ELDON, Mo. (Sept. 5, 2017) – Johnny Herrera produced his 24th top-10 result of the season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last Saturday at Jackson Motorplex to keep himself ranked in the top five of the championship standings.

The doubleheader began on Friday, but a downpour before the main event washed out the night and set up a $10,000-to-win event on Saturday at the half-mile oval in Jackson, Minn. Herrera pulled a high number to start his heat race on the outside of the fourth row.

“It wasn’t the greatest draw, but we rallied from eighth to fourth,” he said. “We missed making the redraw by one. We were pretty happy with overcoming the draw though.”

Herrera ranked ninth in points, which lined him up on the inside of the fifth row for the main event.

“You got in line around the top the first 10 or 12 laps,” he said. “Then the track cleaned off and started getting abrasive. The last 10 laps were right through the middle. We had good speed and gained a couple of positions, but it was hard to pass.”

Herrera advanced to a seventh-place finish. He ranks fifth in the championship standings – only 10 points behind fourth place and 68 points out of third.

Herrera ventured to Lake Ozark Speedway on Sunday for the 8th annual 360 Nationals with the ASCS Warrior Region. He finished where he started – second – in a heat race to line up 13th for the main event.

“I got the car way too tight,” he said. “From the first lap I tried to wrestle that thing. I’d lose two positions and gain three, lose two and gain three. I probably should have crashed three or four times before I did. I got over the cushion, hit the right rear on the wall and it took the right front to it.”

Herrera was battling just outside the top 10 a few laps after the midpoint of the race when he crashed. He was credited with a 22nd-place finish.

Herrera is slated to compete this Friday at Flint Creek Speedway in Colcord, Okla., with the ASCS Red River Region.
