Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (June 28, 2017) – Johnny Herrera overcame a deep starting position to post a top-10 finish and earn the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars during the 46th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup finale on Saturday night at Skagit Speedway.

Herrera started the main event, which was lined up according to points accumulated the prior two nights, in the 15th starting position and he moved forward to a ninth-place result in the 40-lap race.

“Our car was pretty good that night,” he said. “We just started too far back to have much of a chance of getting to the front. It made it more difficult when we ran the first 36 laps non-stop because the cars got pretty strung out. We restarted 11th with four laps to go and were able to move up a couple of more spots, but that was about all we could do since we were a lap down.”

The importance of passing points was evident for Herrera in the prior two nights of preliminary action after drawing the seventh starting position for each of his heat races.

On Thursday, he advanced to fourth in the heat, earning him the pole starting position for his qualifier, which he won. He then finished eighth in the night’s main event after starting seventh.

On Friday, Herrera finished sixth in his heat and seventh in a qualifier after starting eighth. He fell one spot short of advancing to the A Main when he finished fourth in a B Main.

“Friday night definitely hurt us in points for our starting spot on Saturday,” he said. “We were running in third at one point, but lost it toward the end.

“We’re still struggling a bit with the balance of the car. We need to have two good nights in a row. I’m confident we’ll get it back soon and get back on a roll.”

The Fred Brownfield Classic this weekend at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., would seem to be an appropriate place for Herrera to see an improvement in his recent results.

“We’re looking forward to going there,” he said. “It’s been a good track for us recently. I think our last four finishes there are a win and three thirds.”
