Inside Line Promotions – HUMBOLDT, Kan. (May 16, 2017) – Johnny Herrera earned a pair of top-10 finishes last weekend in the state of Kansas to give him 10 top 10s in 11 races this season.

The action began last Thursday at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, where he maneuvered from fourth to second place during a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour heat race. That generated enough points to advance into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 5 to start the main event fifth.

“We just were too tight in the main event,” he said. “I tried something with the setup and it didn’t work out. I think even if I started on the front row we would have faded a few spots.”

Herrera held on for a 10th-place result. He remains ranked second in the ASCS National Tour championship standings.

The weekend concluded on Friday at Humboldt Speedway, where Herrera charged from seventh to third place in a heat race at the ASCS Red River Region show. That locked Herrera into the feature redraw, but this time he pulled the highest number – eight – to start the feature on the outside of the fourth row.

“I like to experiment with the setup sometimes at the regional races and we tried something there at Humboldt,” he said. “It didn’t work. We learned what not to do. But in order to get better you have to keep pushing yourself and trying new ideas.”

Herrera ended with an eighth-place finish.

He is scheduled to compete with the ASCS Red River Region this Friday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla., and Saturday at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla.

Herrera earned top-five results during all four races at Creek County Speedway and a podium finish during his lone visit to Lawton Speedway last year.
