Inside Line Promotions – FORT WORTH, Texas (April 11, 2017) – Johnny Herrera recorded his sixth top-five finish of the season last Saturday during the finale of the Tony Stewart presents the Texas Sprint Car Nationals.

Herrera was strong throughout Round 2 of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, where he won a heat race before advancing from fourth to third place in a qualifier on Saturday. That lined him up on the outside of the third row for the main event.

“I drew a lot better and the track was a lot better on Saturday,” he said. “The track was a little racier and there was more passing. The car was ok, but I still was off a little.”

Herrera spent the race battling inside the top five before he ended with a fifth-place result.

“It wasn’t what we wanted, but we’re happy with it after the way we struggled the first night,” he said. “The car was just a step behind the whole weekend.”

Herrera kicked off the event on Friday by placing fifth in a heat race and eighth in a qualifier. That relegated him to a B Main, in which a runner-up result garnered a transfer into the main event. Herrera then advanced from 19th to 13th in the feature.

“We were a mediocre race car,” he said. “We played catch up and never really got caught up. If I had started in the front we’d have probably run in that area, but we weren’t good enough to drive by guys.”

Herrera, who is ranked second in the ASCS National Tour championship standings, will compete this Saturday at Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo., with the series. He finished third and 10th, respectively, at the track last season.

“We’ve had some success there,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve won there, but we’ve been a pretty good race car. Hopefully we can get our first ASCS National Tour win of the season this weekend.”
