Inside Line Promotions – JACKSON, Minn. (Sept. 7, 2016) – Johnny Herrera had one of the fastest cars out of nearly 40 competitors at the 38th annual AGCO Jackson Nationals last weekend.

“We had good speed all weekend,” he said. “We’ve got things rolling in the right direction.”

Herrera competed in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour portion of the marquee event at Jackson Motorplex, where the action began on Friday with Herrera charging from seventh to second place in a heat race. He was the highest points earner and made the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 3 to start the main event on the inside of the second row.

“We ran second for a long time,” he said. “Restarts seemed to hurt me. I was a little too tight until I got to speed. The track moved around. I fell to third and on the last restart I lost a couple of spots. I was too tight and once I got to speed I wasn’t so bad. The first corner or two I was off on the race car a little bit. We learned some things and made some adjustments.”

Herrera maintained one of the four lock-in positions to Sunday’s main event for the first 18 laps until he lost a spot with seven laps remaining. He finished fifth, which was his 22nd top five of the season.

The team returned to the half-mile oval on Sunday for the finale. Once again, Herrera had one of the faster cars.

“We were fastest in hot laps and won our heat race,” he said.

Herrera started the $10,000-to-win main event on the outside of the fifth row.

“I only got a couple of laps and got crashed,” he said. “We were up to sixth in a couple of laps. I was waiting until it got strung out and I thought we’d have a great race car. If we couldn’t win the race I thought we’d have a podium.”

Herrera advanced into sixth place before a fellow competitor ran into him on Lap 3 in turn two. The impact sent Herrera flipping off the track and he was unable to resume the race. Herrera was credited with a 23rd-place finish.

He is slated to return to action this Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas, with the ASCS Red River Region.
